what will break you? — 4 months ago
This week at slow weights was particularly difficult. At one point, when trying to draw strength by focusing on a particularly difficult situation going on, the anger and determination turned around on me and I started to sob. It totally surprised me. Luckily it was right at the end and like a man I stopped it up and proceeded to get weighed and talk about other things like the dollar and the euro.
Last night, talking with Josh, Asa, and Kellianne at Samantha's birthday party, we talked about whether or not Burning Man would break us. Would social anxieties break our will and either turn us into fetal-positioned balls of whimpering, or would it make us want to build the next fire truck that eats itself while recording itself eating itself, until the camera itself is eaten, along with all its recordings? Asa, Andy and Ingo seem to have survived... but they're stronger than most people.

How I Did It — 4 months ago
We’re getting ready to push some changes to the goal page on 43 Things. First up, the release of How I Did It stories. The How I Did It story allows you to craft a more thoughtful entry about how you accomplished a goal. You’ll be able to share your experiences, resources and pictures with people looking to do the same thing. Here’s how a How I Did It story will look on the goal page (click to enlarge):
This is the first substantive change to the goal page since we launched 43 Things back in 2005. It will take some getting used to — and you may not see these stories at first until folks take the time to write a few How I Did Its, at which point they’ll take the top position on the page.
The goal of these changes is to make 43 Things a more useful resource for people working on their goals. All of us who have accomplished a goal have our own experiences and tips to share with those who are still working on it. Other changes are more housecleaning, as 4 years on the internet leads to stale designs and feature cruft. So when we are done, it will be a pretty new look for 43 Things. Give it a few days to sink in and then let us know what you think.
update: we hope to launch this early next week
re-update: we launched How I Did It stories today (Sept. 9, 2008 @ 4:20pm PST)

I love New York. Working from Aroma Espresso Bar again today. Today seems twice as busy as last week... are all the locals back from their summer vacations now that Labor Day is over? I'm going to the Barbarian Office once
billetdoux gets there.
I love Seth Godin. I like his definition of hard work these days being about taking "apparent risk": "Today, working hard is about taking apparent risk. Not a crazy risk like betting the entire company on an untested product. No, an apparent risk: something that the competition (and your coworkers) believe is unsafe but that you realize is far more conservative than sticking with the status quo." I think this is what big living is all about. Searching constantly for those apparent risks that are actually not risky at all. The whole entry is awesome.
I love Central Park. Especially at night when there are secret dark valleys to explore.
I love Kellianne. I had a great visit to Wilmington, DE, where
artemis grew up. Got to meet her parents, relatives, and friends while eating blue claw crab, getting in the middle of some kid drama, spotting foxes, chasing cicadas, making smores, sitting on the roof of a car watching the stars as it ambled through the neighborhood, eating scrapple, inventing drinks with special ingredients, making out in the pantry, wandering through old stomping grounds, and feeding the little fire on the porch until late late late at night.
I love work. Work as redefined by our modern lives where it is just a clamp that squeezes creativity and diligence and loyalty out of us, a little further than we thought we could go, but always just barely enough to move us forward in a good way.
I love projects. However, I've put aside my attempt to invent Enjoymentland. I don't know enough about it to write about it. Or, maybe I just don't want to pretend like I know more about it than I really do. It's a fine line between trying to move conversations forward and giving the impression of knowing what you're talking about.
I love people watching. Are there any good articles or books about people watching? I remember this one from a while ago. Do you have any games you play while watching people? Mon, September 04, 2006
