Not quite right... — about 1 year ago

Buster McLeod added an entry about create my version of the "clean sweep" checklist:

This model isn’t quite right for the kind of statement I want to make. A single checklist becomes either too flexible and vague, or too tight and stringent and judgmental. I’m going to go another route and ditch this lame path.

Lightning bolts! — about 1 year ago

Buster McLeod added an entry about try acupuncture:

I met a friend of friends (now a first degree friend) a few weeks ago who has an acupuncture practice and since I like riding the wave of serendipity I decided to schedule a meeting. I don’t have any notable physical ailments that I’m trying to heal so I decided to do a more generic stress treatment.

There was a 30 minute interview where I got to answer really personal questions (which I love doing) about my diet, exercise, sex drive, family history with illness, drinking habits, and all kinds of other things. She gave me a few suggestions to improve my diet (have breakfast in particular), then took my pulse and told me all about what that was saying about me and my organs. Apparently, my heart and lungs are not taking in their share of the chi in my system. It’s all being hogged by the stomach, liver (where the drinking happens!), and lower organs. So, her plan was first release some of the general stress in my system, and then open up new pathways for energy to travel between my upper and lower halves.

The stress release was my first experience of acupuncture. I lay on my stomach and she put about a dozen little tiny needles (which I got to examine beforehand… they’re like tiny little pointy brushes… they bend really easily) in a sort of “T” across and down my back. It was simple, painless, and not at all like having your blood drawn from all over your body at once (which I somehow imagined). She left the needles in until my body stopped reacting to them (apparently they get a little red as energy is released at those points like taking the top off a boiling pot). Apparently I recovered fast considering the amount of alcohol I drink… which means I have a really strong liver. Go liver!

The second half involved me laying on my back and her placing three very strategic needles along the center of my chest. But before doing that, she used some kind of paste and placed it on my chest in various places and lit them with incense. It was supposed to bring heat to my skin and prepare them somehow for the crazy jolt I was about to experience. After about 5 minutes of smoldering hot spots (which were not really that hot… mostly soothing and warm), she explained that these needles would redirect my chi, and the sensation would begin with the simple poke that I felt before, but then there would be a secondary sensation 1-5 seconds later that is more of a clenching, and that’s the chi apparently being moved or redirected or something.

I thought it would be subtle, but then the first needle went in. The first part happened, and then the second part was super strong. I felt like my body became incredibly mournful and sad… but in such a strong way I felt like screaming. It wasn’t painful, it was emotional. The second and third needles were slower and weaker to respond… but that first one was a doozy! I couldn’t talk for about a minute. And then I just lay there, still recovering and trying to get a hold of all the crazy emotions that were pulsing through me. They were unattached to anything in particular. Vickie said that it seemed like she had unblocked something that had been blocked up years ago and my body had never re-opened that particular passage way. Maybe it was divorce related, or maybe death of my father related, or maybe some other breakup or difficulty related. Anyway, the sensation eased up after about 5 minutes but I just lay there sort of exhausted.

Finally, she said I could sit back up and I realized that she had taken the needles out minutes ago. But I thought they were still in because of all the weird pulsing and aching that was still going on. I got up and put my shirt back on, and eventually left the office after scheduling 4 more visits in the next months. About half an hour later I felt clear and strong again. Placebo effect or no, I’m feeling more balanced these last couple days.

I’m excited to try the next 4 treatments… first of which is tomorrow… and to find out if it has any more lasting effects on my stress levels and mindset.

New ways of thinking of old things that I thought of at the gym today, heart rate bounding and sinking somewhere between 110 and 140 beats per minute.

My computer's broken.  Harry Potter is over: Voldemort was his father and he had babies with his sister and used the force to steal Bilbo's ring and sell Aslan boots.  My hair's cut.  Daft Punk tonight, can't wait to dance.  I'm between meals.  Iggy Pop is playing.  Heart rate is bounding and sinking according to my acupuncturist.  A lightning bolt hit me in the chest and redirected my chi qi ki adenosine triphosphate calories energy karma mojo je ne sais pas to speak between my lungs and stomach.  They apparently hadn't been speaking for years.

The big circle is the universe.  The circle within that is things experienced.  And the tiny circle within that circle is things controlled.  You may want to draw a line through it.  Rub it out.  Draw another circle, wherever and whichever size, of things enjoyed.  And another within that of things loved.  Grow those circles.  Put googly eyes in them.  Take a picture of it blinking.

If you have energy, use it.  The best way to get energy is to spend what you have on something that regenerates energy.  I want to be healthy.  I want to be good.  I want there to be explosions and for the laws of the universe to redirect all that energy around and back and around and back.  New motto of the day: use your energy, and accept energy from others.

Spook punk is purring in my house, my house.

Did you miss us? — about 1 year ago

You may have noticed two missing sites the last few days:

    • robotcoop.com was down as we swapped the blog over to Wordpress — it should be a stable experience now. No more multiple posts and comments or application errors. Phew.
    • All Consuming was down for about 16 hours — this stemmed from trying to renew the domain and incorrectly having the credit card denied. The credit card has now been accepted and we’re back in business!

Hope you enjoy the new blog.

    Oops … oops … oo … — about 1 year ago

7/26 UPDATE: we’ve added more RAM to the slave database and are adding 4GB more RAM to the master database on Monday.  Are people feeling things are zippier?

UPDATE: sites are back up—and things are better than before. This is game of inches on the performance front but I think we gained about 2 inches with the last buffer move. Okay, back to goaling!

UPDATE: we’re taking the sites down for 5 minutes to increase some mysql buffers—that’s a fancy way of saying hold on for just a sec and things should get much better.

Are you getting a lot of Oops pages in the last few days? You are not alone. I could make up an elaborate explanation, or simply say: we’re working on it. More specifically, we should have two new boxes (aka webservers) up by the end of the week. That may help things hum along. In addition we’re looking into other database efficiencies to deliver us from Oopsland to the promise land.

In other news I was lucky enough to make it this weekend to the Bay Area 43T Meetup in San Francisco and met some great folks. It was rewarding as a user of 43T to meet up with a bunch of smart, insightful 43T’ers. I highly recommend attending and/or organizing a 43T meetup of your own. If you do, let us know how it goes.

P.S. If you’d like to lodge your frustration about Oops-ness, feel free to do so here in the comments. You’ll feel better if you get it off your chest.

Lists of Bests … working on performance issues — about 1 year ago

Thanks for all the email reports regarding performance issues with Lists of Bests in the last couple days. We’re making some tweaks now that should stabilize performance—and we’ll continue to work on getting the site healthy again.

Sorry for the hassle but thanks for your detailed feedback. It’s helpful to us.

Busy week — about 1 year ago

We’ve been busy this week with our new blog at petripoject.com as well as doubling down on making 43 Things a community focused on personal improvement (rather than self harm). But we are also up to our elbows in our newest project: Should do this.

We quietly gave some folks a very early preview of the site for a few weeks but we’ve since pulled it back while we turn our Alpha product into a Beta.

What is Should do this? Put simply, it is an internet based suggestion box, and we think it works great for any person, product, company or non-profit that wants to be in closer touch with what your customers think. It’s also a fun, community filled site in the style of 43 Things. We’ll be using it ourselves to replace our old “ideas” sites.

You can head over now to shoulddothis.com and sign up to get early access to help us test out the new site. And if you run a business, website, school or nonprofit and think you might want to test out managing a suggestion box of your own, drop us a note at shoulddothis @robotcoop.com.
